Join Our Club

Or maybe, don’t join our club. Depending on how much spare cash you’ve got and more importantly Who You Know. Fortunately between the two of us we may just be able to cover both bases. In a year or two! Last night we were invited to the Hong Kong Club, just across the road from my office.  Smartened up in a jacket and tie, and nice dress and heels, we headed in to the imposing building. A polite butler-type ushered us into the bar where we met Sam’s friend, David White, a pillar of HK society (parents’ generation). He is a jolly chap, perhaps more so since he had been in the club since lunchtime, and was quaffing champagne when we arrived.

The Hong Kong Club is one of the island’s most prestigious clubs. No longer just for gentlemen (since 1996), nor for Westerners only (about 30% of members are locals), it retains an old world atmosphere.   Some of the most well known characters in HK society as members.  Booze flows very freely indeed! Service is impeccable.  One imagines that the staff are trained never to turn their back on a member since they sort of shuffle away half bowing to mutterings of “Fi-Di”, “Fi-Di” which means Please Hurry! in Cantonese.

We passed a pleasant couple of hours here, enjoying stories from David’s many personal and professional experiences of HK. He seems to have truly made friends with many locals including some of the most powerful Dragon Ladies here.  We learnt that it was only in 1970 that it became illegal to have two wives. Given his age and background here I was very tempted to ask if he had benefited from this situation prior to 1970!

At 8pm, David and his son headed off to dinner, and we Olsens came back to Central 88 for a roast chicken and rice. Yum!
